Raceway and cable tray, which to choose?

Interchangeable product certification marks.

There are several factors that must be taken into account in the choice of support system for the cables on board of industrial machines. The space available for installation, the need to operate in hazardous locations, the presence of gases or liquids, considerations related to the maintenance and of course the costs are some of the aspects that involve the selection of the most suitable solution. But this is not enough, there is a clear distinction in the legislation between raceways and cable trays and this has a considerable impact on the design and their sizing.

The raceways, according to Art. 100 of NFPA 70 (NEC) and Art. 3.3.76 of NFPA 79, are enclosed channels of metallic or non-metallic materials designed expressly for holding wires and cables.

The cable trays, according to Art. 392.2 of NFPA 70 (NEC) and Art. 3.3.15 of NFPA 79, are unit or assembly of units or sections and associated fittings forming a structural system used to securely fasten or support cables and raceways.

The derating factors imposed on the maximum loads of the cables laid inside of raceways and cable trays, the working temperatures, the types of cables required and the available size of these systems are all factors to consider and which affect on cables’ size. Therefore, the choice between raceway and cable tray must always be made taking into account the cables to be routed within them.
